It seems like just as soon as summer got started, I started receiving flyers in the mail for “back to school savings”. That was cool, because I knew summer just started, right? But now that August is fast approaching, I’m starting to get a little nervous. I’m starting to get overwhelmed by the change in schedules, juggling my educational requirements, employment, football, cheerleading, and getting the kids back to school, ALL AT THE SAME TIME! It makes me want to scream.
This is when I start to doubt myself and my abilities, as a mom, a partner, a student, a woman, and as an employee. As if this is my first go around. Yeah right. I have been juggling these same tasks for almost 12 years now. So why do I start to get anxious almost like clockwork, every August? I have a way of doubting myself, my abilities, even though I know I can do it ALL, But at what cost?
It’s easy to find time during the warm summer months for self care. The sun is shining, the beach is calling. That will change and the weather will become substantially cooler. When I start to get anxious about the shifts soon to come, I remind myself of what I will need to do to care for ME! Let’s face it, all of the tasks that I listed above must be done, there’s no way around them. But, we have to find time for ourselves in order to be well. To be well rounded.
So now I remember how I’ve gotten through each of the last 11/12 years of wearing many hats…why yes, I will tell you what I have done… and continue to do. I remember my worth; I remember I’m not superwoman, and that I matter. As a result, I make it a point to dedicate, from me to me, some ME TIME!
Now what you do in your “ME TIME” might not be what I do in my time, but it is especially designed for you, and that’s all that matters. As for me, you can find me strolling down to the Roslindale Square library, taking a nap, or going for a quick run in my neighborhood. If you see me, beep your horn or give a quick wave hello. I will be sure to return the gesture with a smile, which will fully represent that it’s My TIME! Make it a point to find yours.
